چکیده

HE sterility of triploids and other unbalanced polyploids is generally conT ceded to be a consequence of irregularities in the distribution of univalents and multivalents at meiosis. Occasional viable gametes are produced, however, because of nonrandom orientation and segregation of chromosome associations. Thus, SATINA and BLAKESLEE (1937a, b) found a higher frequency of n and 2n chromosome numbers in gametes produced by triploid Datura than was expected on the basis of random orientation of trivalents. The Canina roses furnish a striking exception to the general rule of sterility of unbalanced polyploids ( FAGERLIND 1940). There are also several reports of fertile triploid and aneuploid individuals in other species. DEMOL (1921) found that triploid Hyacinthus orientalis L. (3n = 24) was fertile, as were various aneuploid strains in this cultivated species. Microspore chromosome numbers of 8 to 14 were found (BELLING 1924) and the fertile progeny contained somatic chromosome numbers of 16 to 30. A triploid form of Crepis artificialis (3n = 36) was obtained in which 17 bivalents and 2 univalents regularly formed (COLLINS et al. 1929). This behavior resulted in 62 to 70 percent pollen fertility in the triploids. In the course of a biosystematic study of several species of Aster (AVERS 1953), three fertile triploid F1 hybrids were obtained. Their unusual chromosome behavior has furnished the basis for the present report.

Cytogenetics of semi-fertile triploid and aneuploid intergeneric vine cacti hybrids.

Crosses between the diploid Hylocereus polyrhizus, as the female parent, and the tetraploid Selenicereus megalanthus, as the male parent, yielded triploid and aneuploid hybrids. The fruits of these hybrids combined the attractive appearance of Hylocereus fruits with the delicious taste of S. megalanthus fruits. The aim of this work was to assess the fertility and breeding potential of the tripl...

Reticulate Evolution of the Rock Lizards: Meiotic Chromosome Dynamics and Spermatogenesis in Diploid and Triploid Males of the Genus Darevskia

Knowing whether triploid hybrids resulting from natural hybridization of parthenogenetic and bisexual species are fertile is crucial for understanding the mechanisms of reticulate evolution in rock lizards. Here, using males of the bisexual diploid rock lizard species Darevskia raddei nairensis and Darevskia valentini and a triploid hybrid male Darevskia unisexualis × Darevskia valentini, we pe...

The formation of the polyploid hybrids from different subfamily fish crossings and its evolutionary significance.

This study provides genetic evidences at the chromosome, DNA content, DNA fragment and sequence, and morphological levels to support the successful establishment of the polyploid hybrids of red crucian carp x blunt snout bream, which belonged to a different subfamily of fish (Cyprininae subfamily and Cultrinae subfamily) in the catalog. We successfully obtained the sterile triploid hybrids and ...

Spontaneous Chromosome Aberrations in Triploid Tradescantia Hybrids.

T HAS recently been found that chromosome aberrations of the types I induced by various kinds of radiations occur spontaneously during the development of the pollen grains in diploid species and especially in species hybrids of Tradescantia (GILES 1940). The present studies have shown that the frequency of these aberrations is even higher in triploid Tradescantia hybrids. Furthermore, it has be...

N2O induces mitotic polyploidization in anther somatic cells and restores fertility in sterile interspecific hybrid lilies

Fertile plants undergoing male gametogenesis can be treated with nitrous oxide (N(2)O) gas to obtain 2n male gametes. N(2)O treatment is also expected to restore the fertility of interspecific hybrids through meiotic restitution or mitotic amphidiploidization. However, this technique has few applications to date, and it is un-known how N(2)O treatment restores fertility in sterile hybrids. To e...
